Phelps Tavern archive

Noah Phelps (above) and his brother, Elisha, were involved in gathering intelligence leading to the Americans’ capture of Fort Ticonderoga in September 1777 during the American Revolution. Prior to the Americans’ capture of the fort, Noah volunteered to be a spy in order to gather information about the fort’s construction, strength and British troop force by posing as a peddler looking for a shave.

Phelps Tavern was originally built in 1771 for Elisha Phelps and his family until the home doubled as a tavern in 1786 when Noah acquired the home’s first tavern license.
